Flüela, Swiss National Park and Julier. More spacious and less touristy, but it demands two moving nights and a longer Sunday return.
Eastern loop ↗Black Forest → Vosges → Colmar
450–550 km · 3 moving nights
Forest ridges, German mountain roads, French Route des Crêtes and wine-country Colmar. Less dramatic than the Swiss Alps but more forgiving in unstable high-pass weather. Requires written Germany/France permission from the rental company.

Drive like the mountains mean it
The passes normally operate in late August, but a seasonal window is not permission to ignore that morning’s road and weather.
Before the keys leave the desk
- Confirm the Swiss rental’s motorway vignette against its registration.
- A compact car is enough; 4×4 is unnecessary.
- Get assigned hotel parking in writing near Meiringen/Innertkirchen.
- Avoid foreign airport pickups unless Swiss road coverage and cross-border use are explicit.
